Nastix Patterns creates calculated drafting guides from measurements and settings. The output is useful for drafting and printing, but it still needs technical review and fitting.
A generated pattern is a drafting calculation, not a scan of an existing template. When you enter your measurements, the generator runs the same construction rules a pattern maker would apply on paper — placing the bust point, shaping the hip curve, rotating dart intake — and outputs a block built for your numbers instead of a standard size chart. That changes the workflow: your job shifts from 'find the closest size and alter it' to 'enter accurate values, review the draft, and verify the print'.
Nastix Patterns covers the core wardrobe blocks — basic skirt, bodice, sleeve, dress, t-shirt, tank top, pants, and shorts — plus the companion pieces that finish a garment: waistband, sleeve cuff, collar, neck facing, armhole facing, skirt vent, belt loop, patch pocket, and pocket flap. Every generator follows the same pipeline described in this guide, so once you have taken one pattern from measurements to fabric, the rest work identically.
This guide walks the full path in order: taking measurements, choosing presets, reading the preview and its construction checks, picking an export format, printing at true scale, assembling tiled sheets, and cutting correctly. None of the steps is difficult, but skipping the verification points — the 5 × 5 cm test square, the join marks, the seam-length checks — is how a mathematically correct pattern turns into a garment that does not fit.

The solid line is the sewing or finished line. The dashed line adds seam or hem allowance and becomes the cutting reference.
Edges that sew together should be checked for compatible length and shape: sleeve to armhole, waistband to waistline, inseam to inseam, and similar pairs.
Preview helps catch obvious mistakes before export, including wrong measurements, unexpected proportions, missing allowance, or an unusual curve transition.
SVG is useful for vector review and editing. PDF and tiled PDF are intended for printing, but must be checked at 100% scale.
A generated draft is only as reliable as the measurements, settings, fabric assumptions, print scale, and final fitting checks. Treat every export as a calculated starting point.
Step by step
Work through the stages in this order. Each stage produces something the next one depends on: measurements feed the draft, the preview validates the draft, the print scale validates the paper, and the assembly marks validate the layout. Verifying at each stage costs minutes; discovering an error at the sewing machine costs the fabric.
Measure over underwear or one thin layer with a flexible tape — snug contact, no compression. Enter real body values in centimetres: the generator adds wearing ease and allowances itself, so do not pad the numbers. Each generator has a measurements page listing exactly which values it needs; a skirt asks for three to four, a pants block closer to eight. Re-measure before each new project rather than reusing months-old values.
Presets control the design decisions the measurements do not: silhouette (straight, pencil, A-line, flared for skirts), ease level, dart configuration, neckline shape, sleeve length, hem and seam allowance widths. If you are unsure, start from the recommended settings — they produce a conservative, fittable draft — and change one option at a time on later iterations so you can attribute every effect to a specific setting.
The preview is not just a picture. The generator verifies that edges which must be sewn together actually match in length — sleeve cap against armhole, waistband against waistline, skirt side seams front against back — and reports the results. Read these checks before downloading. A flagged mismatch almost always traces back to one measurement or an incompatible preset combination; fix the input rather than planning to 'ease it in' at the machine.
Three exports serve three situations. The A4 tiled PDF prints on a home printer and is assembled from multiple sheets. The copyshop PDF is one large page for wide-format plotting — no taping, ideal for pants and dress blocks that span many A4 sheets. The SVG is a true vector file for reviewing the draft in Inkscape or Illustrator, measuring curves digitally, or projector sewing.
In the print dialog set scaling to 100% or 'actual size' — never 'fit to page', which silently shrinks the pattern by 3–6%. Then measure the calibration square on the first sheet with a ruler: it must be exactly 5 × 5 cm in both directions. If it is off by even 2 mm, every circumference in the pattern is off by centimetres. Fix the print settings and reprint before touching the other sheets.
Trim or fold the overlapping margin on each sheet, then match the join marks — align the marks themselves, not the paper edges, because printers position the image slightly differently on every page. Work row by row on a hard flat surface, taping as you go, and check that pattern lines flow continuously across every joint. A cumulative 1 mm slip per joint becomes a 1 cm error across ten sheets.
Each piece shows two outlines: the solid stitch line where seams are sewn, and the dashed cutting line that already includes your chosen allowances. Cut fabric on the dashed line. Transfer notches, darts, and grainline to the fabric, pin pieces with edges matched, and sew at the allowance distance you selected — the seam then lands exactly on the solid line the generator drafted.
Each approach trades time, skill, and fit precision differently. The comparison below assumes a typical single garment; the gap widens in favour of generation when your measurements sit between standard sizes or across them (for example, waist in one size, hips two sizes up).

The approaches combine well: many sewists generate the block for fit, then use flat-pattern techniques on top of it for design changes — exactly what self-drafting books teach, minus the hours of block construction.
The single most damaging error. Fit-to-page scaling shrinks the draft a few percent in each direction, which removes 3–5 cm from a hip circumference while looking perfectly normal on paper. Always select 100% / actual size, and confirm with the test square — on every print job, not just the first.
The 5 × 5 cm square exists because print scale errors are invisible to the eye. Measure it with a ruler in both directions before assembling anything. If a printer applies different scaling horizontally and vertically, only the square reveals it.
When the preview reports that the sleeve cap is longer than the armhole beyond normal ease, that mismatch does not disappear at the machine. Resolve flagged checks by correcting the responsible measurement or preset before downloading — sewing a known mismatch produces puckers or a twisted seam.
Printers place the image with slightly different margins on each page, so flush paper edges do not mean aligned pattern lines. Match the printed join marks and verify that every line crosses the joint without a step. A misaligned assembly changes seam lengths in ways no fitting will explain.
Cutting the fabric on the solid line removes the entire seam allowance and makes the garment one allowance-width too small on every seam — 3 cm total per seam pair. The dashed outer line is the cutting line; the solid line is where the needle goes.
After a fitting, adjust one input at a time and regenerate. Changing ease, dart count, and a measurement simultaneously makes it impossible to tell which change fixed — or caused — the difference you see in the next muslin.
For a loose t-shirt or an elastic-waist skirt in a forgiving fabric, careful measuring plus the preview checks are usually enough. Sew a muslin from an old sheet whenever the garment is fitted (pencil skirt, bodice, pants), the fabric is expensive, or it is your first run with a new generator — pants blocks in particular reward a test garment, because crotch fit cannot be judged on paper.
When a fitting shows a problem, translate it back into an input: waistband digs in → increase waist ease; diagonal drag lines from the side seam → re-measure the waist-to-hip depth; tight sleeve → larger bicep value or more ease. Change the value, regenerate, and reprint only the affected pieces. The generator remembering your measurements makes each loop a matter of minutes.
Before cutting a muslin, pin the assembled paper pieces together along the stitch lines and hold them against your body in a mirror. Gross errors — a skirt length entered as 60 instead of 70, a forgotten dart — show up immediately, at zero fabric cost.
A fitted block still needs finishing: generate the waistband to your exact waist value, the neck or armhole facing from the same neckline settings, the vent for a narrow skirt, cuffs for sleeves. Because the companion pieces are drafted from the same inputs, their sewn edges match the main block without manual adjustment.
Treat it as a precise starting draft. The geometry is calculated correctly for the numbers you entered, but fabric behaviour, posture, and personal preference still show up only in a fitting. Expect a first fitted garment to need small tweaks — the advantage is that each tweak is one regenerated setting instead of a manual pattern alteration.
The A4 tiled PDF. It splits the pattern into printable sheets with overlap margins and join marks, and includes the 5 × 5 cm test square for scale verification. A pencil skirt assembles from roughly 6–9 sheets; a pants block from 15–20. If a copyshop with wide-format printing is nearby, the single-page copyshop PDF saves all the taping.
They compare the lengths of edge pairs that must be sewn together: sleeve cap against armhole circumference, waistband against the waist edge it attaches to, front and back side seams, and similar pairs. Small planned differences (like sleeve cap ease) are allowed for; anything beyond that is flagged so you can correct the inputs before printing.
Yes — download the SVG and open it in any vector editor such as Inkscape (free) or Illustrator. Lines, curves, and labels are true vector paths, so you can add style lines, adjust a curve, or rearrange pieces for a cutting layout. For pure measurement changes, though, regenerating is faster and keeps the construction checks valid.
Almost always a unit or field mix-up: inches entered instead of centimetres (multiply by 2.54), a circumference typed into a length field, or a decimal point slip like 665 instead of 66.5. Compare each entered value against the reference ranges on the measurements page — a proportion error large enough to see in the preview is always visible in one of the inputs.
Worked digital case
This traceable example follows a basic skirt from entered values to the exact vector used by preview and download. It shows what is calculated automatically and what still needs a human sewing check.
The case uses a 72 cm waist, 98 cm hips, 20 cm waist-to-hip depth, 60 cm length, 4 cm ease, and two back darts. Allowances remain separate construction settings.
The drafting block calculates front and back widths, dart intake, hip level, curved side seams, fold and grain references, and the cutting outline.
The browser preview, editable SVG, full-size copyshop PDF, and tiled A4 PDF originate from the same piece geometry rather than independent drawings.
Print at 100%, measure the 5 × 5 cm square, join tiled pages without scaling, compare the paper waist and hips, and sew a toile when fit is important.
The generated waist is 72.0 and the finished hip is 102.0, both derived from the entered body values and ease.
