Measure the garment neckline along its stitching line. Hood height controls head room, while depth controls how far the hood reaches around the face.
Close fit reduces volume and overlap, standard gives balanced everyday ease, and relaxed adds height, depth, and neckline ease.
The rounded crown creates a smooth top curve; the pointed option creates a sharper crown direction while keeping the same neckline calculation.
Compare the hood neckline seam with the actual garment neckline after shoulder seams and any front opening are prepared.

From neckline to finished hood
A hood is not an isolated decorative shape. Its lower seam must fit the finished neckline, while height, depth, crown shaping and front overlap determine whether it sits close to the head, layers over hair, or falls as a relaxed hood. Use the generator after the garment neckline is established, then check the complete lower edge against that garment before cutting.
Measure the finished front and back neckline along the stitching line with seam allowances excluded. Include both sides of a symmetrical garment and stop at the actual center-front edges. Measuring the outer cutting line adds length around curves and creates a hood that cannot be eased cleanly into the opening.
Height controls the vertical room from neckline to crown; depth controls how far the hood projects from back head to face. Increasing both creates a genuinely relaxed hood. Increasing only depth moves the front edge forward, while increasing only height can leave excess fabric at the crown.
A center-front overlap changes the usable lower seam and the position of the face opening. Decide whether the edge will be simply hemmed, faced, bound or turned into a casing before finalizing depth. Thick drawcord channels and double layers need more room than a narrow binding.
A rounder crown softens the top seam and a flatter crown gives a more angular silhouette. Neither setting fixes a wrong neckline measurement or insufficient head room. First establish the lower seam and overall volume, then adjust the crown while keeping the back and front transitions smooth.
Work through these checks on the paper or toile before attaching the hood to the final garment.
