Placement and topstitching
The guide aligns to center front, shows the overlap side, marks the top and bottom zipper stops, and carries the visible topstitch curve.
Build a coordinated fly-front set for trousers, jeans, or shorts. Enter the zipper chain length, overlap, facing and shield widths, bottom extension, top offset, topstitch distance, closure direction, and seam allowance, then export full-size pieces from one checked geometry.
The generator does not change the rise or crotch curve. Apply the guide to a traced copy of a tested front and sew the complete fly with its waistband before cutting final fabric.
Real generated example
This preview is generated with the tailored-trouser preset: 16 cm zipper chain, 3.5 cm overlap, 5 cm facing, 4 cm finished shield, 3 cm bottom extension, and 1 cm seam allowance. The zipper stops and working length are shared by all three elements.

The shaped facing extends beyond the 3.5 cm overlap so the zipper tape and topstitching remain supported from waist to lower stop.
The unfolded shield is symmetrical around its fold line and finishes wide enough to cover the zipper from the inside without entering the teeth.
The generator compares the zipper span on all pieces and confirms that the finished shield is not narrower than the selected overlap.
For this example the guide, facing, and shield each carry exactly 160 mm between zipper-stop marks. The 40 mm finished shield exceeds the 35 mm overlap by 5 mm, while the 25 mm topstitch line stays inside the 50 mm facing.
SVG preserves editable vector geometry. The copyshop PDF places the set at full size on one sheet, while the tiled A4 PDF adds overlap, tile labels, a cover preview, and a true 5 × 5 cm scale square.
Using the generated pieces
The set contains one marking template and two fabric pieces. The placement guide is not a garment piece and is never cut from fabric. The facing and shield are cut from fabric, prepared separately, and joined to opposite sides of the front opening.
Align the CF line with the center-front seam line on the trouser pattern or sewn front. The second vertical line shows the extension edge, the short cross marks identify the zipper chain stops, and the dashed curve is the visible topstitching path. The closure label states which wearer side overlaps.
The facing finishes the raw center-front edge on the overlapping front and supports the zipper tape and decorative stitching. Its curved or straight lower edge ends below the bottom stop so the topstitching can turn safely without crossing the metal zipper stop.
The shield sits behind the zipper on the underlap side. Its printed width is the unfolded double layer; the dashed center line is folded lengthwise. Once prepared, the finished shield covers the zipper teeth and prevents them from catching clothing or skin.
Before cutting fabric
This generator supplies the fly components and placement geometry; it does not redraw the waist, front rise, or crotch curve of the base garment. Work on a traced copy of a front pattern that already fits, and preserve its original center-front seam below the fly.
Identify the stitching line, not the cutting edge. If the base pattern already includes seam allowance or a cut-on extension, trace the underlying center-front seam before adding this system. The two fronts must still meet on that line when the fly is closed.
Follow the selected wearer-side label. The overlap front carries the facing and visible topstitching; the underlap front carries the zipper tape and shield. Mirror the paper guide only by changing the closure-direction control, not by guessing from the page view.
Place the zipper top stop below the waist seam by the selected top offset. The bottom stop must remain above the point where the front crotch curves sharply. Keep the extra lower extension in the facing and shield, but retain the original crotch seam below it.
The generated facing and shield already include the selected seam allowance. On the garment fronts, add the allowance required by the chosen attachment method only once. Compare the finished waist seam so neither front gains accidental width.
Construction sequence
Construction order matters because several seams become inaccessible after the front crotch is closed. The sequence below assumes a separate facing and folded shield. Test it in matching fabric and use a nylon coil zipper for the first sample because it is easier to shorten above the top stop.
Print at 100% and measure the scale square. Measure the zipper chain from top stop to bottom stop, excluding loose tape. If it differs from the entered value, edit the generator before cutting any fly component.
Cut one facing and one unfolded shield on grain using the outer seam-allowance line. Mark the shield fold, zipper stops, topstitch path, center front, and lower fly point. Clip no alignment mark deeper than 3 mm.
Interface the facing and the appropriate shield half without shrinking them. Finish the facing free edge. Fold the shield right sides together, sew its lower shape, grade the allowance, turn it out, and press the fold cleanly.
Stay the waist and fly curves. With fronts right sides together, sew the center-front seam from the lower fly point through the crotch using the garment allowance. Baste the opening above that point on the true center-front line.
Sew the facing to the overlap front along center front, stopping precisely at the lower fly point. Grade and understitch the seam, then turn the facing inside and press without shifting the original center-front line.
Place the closed zipper behind the basted opening with stops on their marks. Attach one tape to the underlap extension first, keeping teeth a few millimetres from center front. Then close the overlap and pin the second tape to the facing only.
Place the shield behind the underlap zipper tape with its folded edge protecting the teeth. Sew through the shield, tape, and underlap allowance, but keep the overlap front free. Check from the right side that the shield is invisible when closed.
Open the overlap away from the shield and stitch along the transferred line through the garment and facing. Stop before the lower curve, close the zipper, smooth all layers, then complete the curve without catching the shield.
Form a short horizontal or angled bar tack at the lower end through the overlap, facing, and shield where the design allows. Remove center-front basting, test the zipper, trim excess top tape, and enclose it when attaching the waistband.
Quality control
A fly can look distorted even when every component was cut accurately. Check the order of operations, the true center-front line, zipper-tape tension, and which layers were caught before changing the generated dimensions.
The zipper tape was likely stretched, the front edge was not stabilized, or the facing was fused with shrinkage. Baste with the garment supported flat, sew without pulling either layer, and let fused pieces cool completely before matching zipper stops.
Verify that the fronts meet on the true center-front line and that the overlap equals the selected width. The zipper may be too close to center front or the facing may have rolled outward. Repress the seam inward and reposition the tape on the facing.
The shield fold must clear the teeth and stay free while the overlap is topstitched. Attach it only to the underlap side until the final tack. Before sewing the curve, place a narrow ruler between shield and facing to confirm they are separate.
The fly system was probably added from a cutting edge instead of the seam line, or an allowance was counted twice. Return both fronts to the true waist and center-front intersections, close the fly on the pattern, and confirm the waistband seam length before recutting.

Zipper-fly drafting guide
The generator coordinates the small fly pieces, but the base garment still controls the rise, crotch, waist, and wearing ease. Use these checks to connect the generated set to a tested trousers or shorts pattern.
Enter the usable chain length, not the full tape. The top stop normally sits below the waist seam so it can be enclosed without bulk. The bottom stop must remain above the tight crotch curve, leaving room for the facing and shield to turn.
Overlap width hides the zipper but must not add garment circumference. When closed, the left and right center-front seam lines still meet. Any extension projects beyond that line and belongs to the closure construction rather than the finished body width.
Facing width must exceed both the overlap and the topstitch offset. A facing that ends beneath the decorative line creates a ridge and cannot support the lower curve. The generator rejects combinations that leave less than 5 mm of internal coverage.
The entered shield width is its finished folded width. It should be at least as wide as the overlap, yet its folded edge must clear the teeth. Heavy denim may need grading and partial interfacing so four layers do not build up at the waistband.
Left-over-right means the wearer’s left front is the visible overlap; right-over-left means the wearer’s right front overlaps. This remains true when you face the garment from the outside, so follow the printed label instead of mirroring by eye.
A technically correct fly cannot repair a tight rise, tilted waist, or incorrect crotch curve. Sew the sample into a mock-up of the actual front, attach a waistband strip, sit down, and confirm that the zipper end does not press into the body.
Who, how, and when
This generator is maintained as application code: measurements are converted into vector geometry, related seams are measured numerically where the construction requires it, and the same geometry is used for preview, SVG, copyshop PDF, and tiled A4 PDF.
