Closure detail

Create a front placket pattern

Generate matching buttonhole and button-side placket pieces for shirts, blouses, and dresses with fold guides and evenly spaced button marks.

Front placket pieces

Real generated example

From button settings to a printable front placket pair

Matched left and right

This example generates separate buttonhole and button plackets with fold lines, allowances, and seven aligned markers. It is the actual downloadable geometry.

Settings used

Placket length
62 cm
Finished width
3 cm
Fold-under
1.5 cm
Buttons
7
Top offset
7 cm
Bottom offset
8 cm
Seam allowance
1 cm
Button diameter
1.2 cm

Button spacing is calculated between the selected top and bottom offsets. Buttonhole length includes working clearance beyond the entered button diameter.

Generate your front placket

Print at 100%, verify the test square, and test the closure layout on the garment front.

Generated buttonhole and button plackets for this example

What the generator calculated

Matched pair

Left and right plackets share one length

Both generated pieces are 62.0 cm long and differ from the requested length by 0.0 mm.

Fold geometry

Finished width and turn-under are explicit

The sewn placket is 3.0 cm wide, with a 1.5 cm fold-under and 1.0 cm seam allowance drawn separately.

Marker layout

Seven evenly spaced closures

7 markers are spaced 7.8 cm apart. Each horizontal buttonhole is 1.5 cm long for the selected button.

Front placket construction guide

A matched button closure generated as two printable pieces

The generator separates the buttonhole and button sides, places fold and cutting lines, and distributes closure markers between controlled top and bottom offsets.

Pair

Buttonhole and button plackets

Both pieces share the selected length and finished width while carrying the marks required for their different closure roles.

Measurements

Length, width, fold-under, and offsets

Finished width describes the sewn placket; fold-under and seam allowance add the material required to construct it.

Buttons

Spacing is calculated between two limits

The first and last button offsets define the usable interval, and the remaining positions are distributed evenly within it.

Buttonholes

Button diameter needs working clearance

The marker includes clearance beyond the button diameter and must fit inside the finished placket width in the chosen orientation.

Fit

Test the placket on the actual garment

Confirm chest-level placement, collar and hem clearances, overlap direction, and button spacing on the shirt, blouse, or dress front.

Print

Long pieces need scale control

Print at 100%, check the 5 × 5 cm square, and align tiled pages without overlap or fit-to-page scaling.

Who, how, and when

Drafting logic by Nastix Design

This generator is maintained as application code: measurements are converted into vector geometry, related seams are measured numerically where the construction requires it, and the same geometry is used for preview, SVG, copyshop PDF, and tiled A4 PDF.

Generator content and output workflow reviewed 13 July 2026. A generated block remains a fitting starting point; verify measurements, print scale, fabric behaviour, and a test garment.

Common questions

Front placket pattern FAQ

Are both sides of the front closure included?

Yes. The export contains a buttonhole placket and a button-side placket with coordinated length, folds, allowances, and marker positions.

How is the distance between buttons calculated?

The generator subtracts the selected top and bottom offsets from the total length and divides the remaining interval evenly between the selected number of buttons.

Can horizontal buttonholes be wider than the placket?

No. The tool validates the button diameter plus working clearance against the finished placket width and asks for a correction when it will not fit.

Does the generator place the placket on my garment?

No. It creates the closure pieces. You must position and test them on the actual garment front, accounting for collar, bust, waist, and hem.

Which file should I print at home?

Use the tiled A4 PDF at actual size or 100%, then verify the 5 × 5 cm square before joining the long pages.
