A pocket that looks balanced on the flat pattern may still be too small for a hand, distorted by a curved garment area or weakened at its upper corners.
Choose usable width from function rather than garment scale alone. A phone pocket needs finished internal dimensions after side allowances are turned; a chest pocket can be decorative. Fold a paper rectangle to finished size and place the actual object inside before selecting the final values.
The opening is handled repeatedly and the upper corners receive concentrated stress. A deeper turned hem supports topstitching but reduces internal depth. Plan interfacing or a second fold, then keep button, snap or flap placement clear of the hem’s lower edge.
Rounded corners are forgiving to the hand but require controlled gathering or a pressing template. Angled corners create clean lines but must be mirrored accurately. Square corners maximize capacity and are simple to mark, though bulky fabrics may need mitring or graded allowances.
Keep the pocket grain aligned with the garment unless a deliberate bias effect is tested. Place it away from seam allowances and strong curves that make the flat piece gape. On pairs, transfer a common horizontal and vertical reference so both pockets finish at the same height and angle.
