Sleeve cuff pattern guide
The generator turns the target cuff opening, finished height, ease, overlap, and allowance settings into a full-size rectangular pattern piece. Use these notes to select the right cuff construction and verify it against the sleeve before cutting.
The pattern includes the seam line, cutting line, fold line, overlap or extension guide, button marker where applicable, selected seam allowance, labels, and a 5 × 5 cm print test square.
Use the finished sleeve opening or wrist target as the base circumference. Finished height controls cuff depth, ease controls comfort, and overlap adds the extension needed for a button closure.
The standard preset creates a folded button cuff, the wide preset increases finished height, and the elastic option uses elastic length for a pull-on opening. Every dimension remains editable.
Measure the sleeve edge on its seam line after any pleats, gathers, or placket preparation. The cuff attachment seam must match that prepared opening, with only the intended ease or gathering difference.
Test the overlap direction, button position, interfacing weight, seam allowance, and folded thickness in the actual fabric. Thick fabrics may need a small length adjustment for turn of cloth.
Print at actual size or 100% with scaling disabled and measure the test square first. Use tiled A4 at home, copyshop PDF for a full-size sheet, or SVG for vector editing.
Cuff construction choices
The finished wrist or sleeve-opening measurement controls the long edge of a cuff, but construction determines how much extra material is needed. A button cuff needs overlap and underlap; an elastic cuff needs a casing and usable elastic length; a wide fashion cuff must still pass over the hand or open far enough at the placket.
Use the sleeve opening after pleats, gathers or tucks have been arranged, not the raw sleeve width before shaping. Walk the seam line from one placket edge to the other. If the cuff is intended to gather the sleeve, keep the sleeve value and finished cuff value separate so the fullness remains intentional.
The finished cuff circumference describes the closed cuff. Button overlap is additional length used to place button and buttonhole layers over one another. Do not increase the wrist value to create overlap, because that changes fit all around the arm instead of only at the closure.
A folded cuff has an outer layer that travels farther around the fold than the inner layer. On thick coating, fleece or heavily interfaced shirting, a paper-perfect rectangle can finish smaller. Fuse a sample, fold it exactly as planned and measure the closed inside circumference.
The elastic preset is a starting calculation, not a universal percentage. Soft elastic may need to be shorter than firm elastic to hold the same opening, while excessive reduction causes pressure and distorted gathers. Test a loop around the wrist over the intended clothing layer before cutting the casing piece.
Verify the sleeve, cuff and fastening as one assembly rather than checking the rectangle alone.
How and when
This generator converts the entered measurements into vector geometry. Where a construction has related seams, the software can calculate their lengths; preview, SVG, copyshop PDF, and tiled A4 PDF are produced from the same geometry. These software checks do not replace printing, sewing, or fitting a test sample.
