Sewing pattern glossary

Short explanations of common terms used across the pattern generators, previews, and exported files.

Seam line

The line where two pieces are intended to be sewn together. In previews it is usually the solid construction outline.

Cutting line

The outer line used for cutting fabric after adding seam or hem allowance.

Seam allowance

Extra fabric added outside the seam line so pieces can be sewn and finished.

Hem allowance

Extra fabric at a lower edge, such as pants or shorts hem, used for folding and finishing.

Grainline

A guide showing how to align the pattern piece with the fabric grain.

Dart

A folded wedge that removes excess fabric and shapes the garment around the body.

Crotch curve

The curved seam area in pants and shorts that connects the front, back, and inner leg.

Inseam

The inner leg seam from crotch to hem on pants or shorts.

Outseam

The side seam from waist to hem on pants or shorts.

Ease

Additional room beyond body measurements for movement, comfort, and fabric behavior.

Armhole

The opening where a sleeve is sewn into a bodice or T-shirt.

Neckband

A separate strip sewn around a neckline, common on T-shirts and knit tops.
