Turn a center-front opening into a placket that has enough structure, sensible proportions, and evenly placed buttons before you generate the pattern.
A front placket is a narrow pattern piece, but it controls the visual center of a shirt or shirt dress. Its length must match the garment opening, its finished width must suit the collar and buttons, and its folds must hide raw edges without creating unnecessary bulk. Treating it as a generic rectangle usually leaves one of those jobs unresolved.
The Nastix generator separates the decisions that are often bundled together: finished width is the visible band; fold-under is the hidden return; seam allowance is the sewing margin; top and bottom offsets reserve quiet space at the ends; button count divides only the usable length. This makes the output easier to audit than a strip with unexplained marks.
Use the numbers below as drafting logic, not as an industry size chart. Fabric thickness, garment scale, collar stand, bust placement, hem depth, and the actual button all affect the final choice. Finished width is what remains visible after folding. Fold-under is the return that encloses the raw edge. Wider or thicker combinations need more careful grading and pressing.
Top and bottom offsets are reserved first. The remaining interval is divided by one fewer than the number of buttons, because seven buttons create six spaces.
Before cutting, compare the generated placket length with the garment opening, print the scale check at 100%, and place the real button over the buttonhole marker. A calculated pattern cannot compensate for a mismatched opening or an untested button.
Drafting workflow
Work from the garment and the real closure components. The order matters: length and finished width establish the piece; offsets and button count establish the layout.
Measure the finished opening on the pattern's seam line, excluding any seam allowance. For a full shirt this is usually the neckline seam to the finished hem; for a partial placket it is the exact slit length. If left and right fronts differ, correct the garment pattern before drafting the plackets.
Judge width beside the collar stand, garment scale, and actual button. The generator's standard preset uses 3 cm; narrow uses 2.4 cm; long uses 3.2 cm. These are starting proportions, not rules. Print or fold a paper strip and view it at full garment scale.
Fold-under is hidden inside the finished placket and should fully cover the raw edge after pressing. Seam allowance sits outside the seam line and is not part of finished width. The standard preset uses 1.5 cm fold-under and 1 cm seam allowance; do not add either value to placket length.
Measure offsets from finished edges to button centers. Keep the top button compatible with the collar stand and neckline; keep the bottom button above the finished hem or the end of a partial opening. These offsets are removed from the length before spacing is calculated.
Use: (placket length − top offset − bottom offset) ÷ (button count − 1). With the standard 62 cm length, 7 cm top offset, 8 cm bottom offset, and 7 buttons, the usable interval is 47 cm and the spacing is 47 cm ÷ 6 = 7.83 cm.
Equal mathematical spacing is a clean default, but a fitted shirt may need a button positioned at the fullest bust to prevent gaping. Mark that critical point first, then redistribute nearby buttons without creating one visibly short interval.
Use the actual button diameter as the input. The generator adds working ease to derive the marked buttonhole length. Horizontal buttonholes resist opening forces well on a center-front band; vertical buttonholes can suit narrow bands, but require careful alignment along the center.
Confirm that button and buttonhole pieces have the same finished length, fold lines are inside the cutting outline, and all markers fall between the reserved offsets. Print at 100%, verify the scale square, and hold the placket against the garment pattern before fabric cutting.
These values explain what each generator input controls. Preset numbers are useful paper-prototyping starts; the garment pattern and test sample remain the authority.

Standard preset example: 62 cm length, 3 cm finished width, 1.5 cm fold-under, 7 buttons, 7 cm top offset, 8 cm bottom offset, 1 cm seam allowance, and a 1.2 cm button. Validate these values against your garment rather than copying them automatically.
Seven buttons create six intervals, not seven. Dividing by seven compresses the entire group upward and the bottom offset no longer matches the plan.
Placket length describes the finished opening. Adding seam allowance to that input and then letting the generator add it again produces a strip longer than the garment edge.
Perfectly equal marks can still gape if no closure lands near the fullest bust. On fitted garments, anchor that functional point and then balance the surrounding intervals.
Button diameter affects buttonhole length and the visual scale of the band. Choose the real button first and make a test hole in the same interfaced fabric stack.
