A good front placket looks uneventful: two straight parallel edges, a consistent width, buttonholes centered on one side, buttons centered on the other, and a hem and neckline that meet when closed. Achieving that calm result depends less on decorative stitching than on controlling the fabric before every irreversible step.
This workflow assumes separate generated buttonhole and button placket pieces. The same sequence also applies to a cut-on shirt placket if you transfer the seam and fold lines to the extended front. The key is to preserve the generated finished width while seam allowance and fold-under disappear inside.
Interfacing, thread, needle, stitch length, and buttonhole settings should be tested on a scrap made from the same number of layers as the real placket. A single-layer test is misleading: the machine feeds and cuts a fused multi-layer band differently.

Construction order
Complete collar and hem intersections in the order required by your garment pattern, but keep this internal sequence: stabilize, attach, reduce bulk, press to width, topstitch, test, then make closures.
Cut the button and buttonhole plackets with their marked seam lines, fold lines, top and bottom edges, and closure centers. Transfer marks with chalk, thread tracing, or removable pen; do not notch through a narrow finished band where the cut may remain visible.
Test fusible on scrap for bubbling, strike-through, shrinkage, and stiffness. Fuse from the center outward without sliding the iron, then leave the piece flat until fully cool. For heat-sensitive or textured fabric, use sew-in interfacing or a lightweight woven organza support.
Match the placket to the garment center-front edge and stitch at the generated allowance. Check top and bottom reference points before sewing the second side. An error of 2 mm at the seam changes the visible band by the same amount after folding.
Trim enclosed layers to staggered widths and clip only where a curve or corner needs to spread. Press the seam as sewn, then press allowances toward the placket. Use a clapper on crisp wovens and let the section cool before moving it.
Fold the raw outer edge inward on its marked line, then wrap the placket to its finished width. A card template cut to the exact finished width makes this repeatable. The folded edge should cover the attachment stitching on the inside without rolling past it.
Hand-baste or use washable glue where the inner fold must stay exactly over the seam. Topstitch from the right side, keeping the same needle distance from the fold. Lengthen the stitch slightly on thick layers and stop with the needle down if you must reposition.
Build a scrap with fashion fabric, interfacing, fold-under, and the same topstitching. Sew, cut, and test the actual button. Adjust density, slit length, stabilizer, or presser-foot compensation until the edges remain flat and the button passes without force.
Confirm orientation and start point, support the garment so its weight cannot drag, and sew all holes in the same direction. Cut with a chisel or guarded seam ripper and apply fray treatment only if it is compatible with the fabric.
Align neckline, hem, and both placket edges, then mark through each finished buttonhole onto the button side. Sew flat buttons with a thread shank suited to fabric thickness; add a small backing button on delicate fabric if the main button pulls.
Close every button and check that the placket remains straight, finished edges meet, stripes or checks align where intended, and no buttonhole pulls open at rest. Press from the wrong side over a cloth so button rims do not imprint.
Use the symptom to find the stage that needs correction. Most placket defects begin before buttonholes are sewn.

Unpick topstitching and correct width before making buttonholes. After holes are opened, local repairs are visible and remaking the affected front may be the cleanest solution.
Interfacing can shrink the placket while the garment front stays full length. Fuse a measured scrap first and pre-shrink materials when appropriate.
If you grade allowances immediately, you remove the reserve needed to correct an inaccurate attachment seam. Press and measure finished width first; trim only when the geometry is confirmed.
A buttonhole that looks perfect on a flat scrap may jam or pucker on the real fused, folded stack. Reproduce every layer and topstitch line in the test.
Small sewing and pressing differences accumulate. Mark final button centers through the completed buttonholes while the garment edges are aligned, not from the original paper marks alone.
Check visible width near the neckline, middle, and hem. A 1–2 mm drift is noticeable along a long straight center front; correct the fold before permanent topstitching.
Button the garment and check the bust, waist, and sitting position. A placket that lies flat on a table can still open under body strain.
Both fronts must end at the same neckline seam and finished hem. The collar stand should cover matching amounts of each placket, and the lower corners should overlap without stepping.
Interfacing, thread, and buttons must tolerate the garment's wash and heat settings. Launder the test stack if the fabric or fusible is unfamiliar.
Traditional placement varies by garment convention and design. Decide the overlap side before cutting, then keep the generated buttonhole and button pieces identified throughout construction. Function and consistency matter more than following a convention blindly.
The buttonhole side nearly always benefits from stabilization. The button side may also be interfaced for matching weight and button support, especially in light fabric. Test the closed overlap: two heavily fused bands can become unnecessarily rigid.
After the placket is attached, folded, topstitched, and pressed, but before sewing on buttons. Complete any collar or hem operation that changes the placket's finished edges first.
Common causes are stretched fabric, excessive thread tension, high presser-foot pressure, dense short stitches, or incompatible interfacing shrinkage. Test on the full stack and adjust one variable at a time.
