The generator places bodice and skirt darts on the same continuous pieces, closes the front bust dart mathematically when checking the side seam, and records the neckline and armhole lengths needed for later collar, facing, or sleeve work.

Basic dress pattern guide
A made-to-measure dress foundation from shoulder to hem
The generator combines bodice and skirt shaping into continuous front and back dress pieces. It positions bust and waist darts, balances the sewn side seams, records armhole lengths, and adds seam and hem allowances for printing.
Continuous front and back dress pieces
The pattern contains front and back half-patterns cut on the fold, bodice and skirt waist darts, a front side-bust dart, neckline and armhole curves, waist and hip guides, grainlines, notches, allowances, and a 5 × 5 cm test square.
Bust, waist, hips, bodice balance and skirt length
Bust, waist, hips, and ease define horizontal fit. Separate front and back lengths establish vertical balance, while shoulder, armhole, bust-point measurements, and skirt length position the upper body, darts, waist, and hem.
Bust darts and continuous waist shaping
Front bust-point measurements place the waist and side-bust darts. Matching upper and lower dart widths create a continuous waist transition, while soft, regular, or strong shaping changes how closely the dress follows the body.
Checked shoulder and effective side seams
The generator checks front and back shoulder lengths and compares the complete side seams after the front bust dart is closed. The back skirt length is adjusted toward the front seam, with a final tolerance of 3 mm.
Classic, fitted, narrow or A-line direction
Control hem sweep, six neckline shapes, and set-in, sleeveless, or relaxed armholes. The download does not include a sleeve or closure, so use the recorded armhole length and add the construction details required by the final design.
A4 tiled PDF, copyshop PDF or SVG
Print tiled pages at 100% with scaling disabled and verify the test square. Use copyshop PDF for one full-size sheet or SVG when the foundation needs precise vector modelling.
Who, how, and when
Drafting logic by Nastix Design
This generator is maintained as application code: measurements are converted into vector geometry, related seams are measured numerically where the construction requires it, and the same geometry is used for preview, SVG, copyshop PDF, and tiled A4 PDF.
Generator content and output workflow reviewed 13 July 2026. A generated block remains a fitting starting point; verify measurements, print scale, fabric behaviour, and a test garment.
Common questions
Custom basic dress pattern FAQ
Is the dress pattern generated from my measurements?
Yes. EU presets provide starting values, but the final bust, waist, hips, lengths, shoulder, armhole, bust-point position, neckline, darts, and hem are recalculated from the measurements and options entered.
Is this a finished dress sewing pattern or a foundation?
It is a printable basic dress foundation with front and back shaping. Depending on the design, you may still need to add a closure, facings or lining, pockets, sleeve details, and construction instructions.
How are front and back side seams matched?
The generator measures the curved side seam from underarm to hem, subtracts the front bust-dart opening to represent the closed seam, and adjusts the back skirt length toward that effective front length.
Does the dress download include a sleeve?
No. You can select an armhole direction for a set-in sleeve, sleeveless dress, or relaxed opening, and the generator reports the complete armhole length. A separate sleeve still needs to be drafted and tested for the chosen style.
How should I print the A4 dress pattern?
Print at actual size or 100%, disable fit-to-page scaling, and measure the 5 × 5 cm test square before trimming and joining the tiled pages.
